Forum: GratefulDead Subject: So Many Roads........ of Pig

This is the thread I wanted to begin yesterday , but did not have the time to do it correctly . Hence the half-arsed attempt below on how not to write a thread . Onto the fun .

The cheap bastards at Rhino are giving us a 2 disc set of Pig , since they criminally left him out of the original boxed set . They want us to choose the set list . Let's say we have a total of 160' . What must be on those discs ?

I would want something from his solo work at the end .

Caution , Easy Wind , You See A Broken Heart , Sick and Tired , Big Boss , Rub , Next Time , Smokestack , Alligator , Come Back Baby , King Bee , Same Thing , and Mr. Charlie
are just some of our choices . As AR said in her review of 6 - 24 - 70 , let's get Pigadelic .

edit - link to IA , GD by year , not working ?

edit #2 - Not the best of people , how could we ever do that ? What do You think ought to be on ?

'Katie Mae' is a sweet pig cover, the one on "history of the GD" is a personal fav as well as 5-15-70 which is also very nice. 'Empty Pages' is quite a rarity (the only place i have heard it is Dick's Picks 35), as well as being a very tragic and heartfelt song.

I dont care for "Best Of" albums or compilations. They are pure cheese.

Why not release his apartment tapes "Bring Me My Shotgun" or better yet, the entire Gaelic Park performance...

Cliff.. I agree.. Best of and Compilations somehow miss the "atmosphere or theme of the album or CD.. Too many different tempos..sounds from different eras, etc. How do you separate LIVE/DEAD and other many live Dead recordings from their place and time. How do you listen to a track from Meet the Beatles and SGT Pepper next to each other? and why do you want to?. The "Hits Collections" suck.

gotta have "Hard to Handle" - inimitable opening 'Bay-ay-bee" vocals. Personally though, I can live without some of his 15 minute raps - get to the goods!

uj--I see we agree on a number of things...early era fan I be, I rarely listen to the PP numbers, the raps I find esp tiresome (won't go into the implications, etc., we've all been over that aspect), and much prefer a simple song like Operator.

I do, however, tend to cringe during the "Bay Beeee" intro myself (H2H), esp when non heads are in the vicinity...

I agree ( except H2H ). I like the Easy Wind , Caution , Same Thing type of Pig .
Some of his raps are amazing , though .

(bumping fists) Forgot about Operator, doesn't show up often, only played 4 times live - good little song.

If some find Bobby banshee endearing, I can let Pig out on a leash for a Bay-Bee. (Now wait a minute!)

Ha!

Yeah, as you and micah allude to, though, I really thought his true niche was the almost "solo" style, blues-esque, down in the dumps, life done me wrong sorts of tunes...Operator is a more upbeat example, of course. But the in your face, leader of the dance band "production" was his calling in the early live shows, IMHO (ie, the long numbers with the raps).

For me, having been obsessed with the Early Era so long, the raps and such for some of his songs (MHr, LL, GMLSG) just became somewhat repetitive, etc., so I wore myself out on em. I do recognize that the big show stopping number was all PP in those early yrs, however diminished he might have been in terms of other contributions to the "production"!

it just takes so long to get to that Mojo hand...

would've liked to hear more Pig on the harp.

as to non-heads in the vicinity, let 'em eat cake!

I couldn't possibly pick The Best of Pig ... I don't know nearly enough!!! But as it happens, today I've been listening to 4/14/72 (Copenhagen). It's a great show for many reasons, but check out the whole Good Lovin'/Caution section -- it's a smoking hot blues sandwich, heavy on the Pig. He had less than a year to live, and he's going at it as if he knew time was short.

"smoking hot blues sandwich"... for some reason those words resonate with me... perhaps because of the endless possibilities for alternatives to the world "blues"?

smoking hot ____ sandwich

get on it, people!

i kinda like this song musically, but pig never sang it well. kind of a shame. as strong as he was on the blues stuff, he didn't really have much control as a vocalist.

feel free to contradict me with a great version of "the stranger"!

The one performed at the legendary Rotterdam 72 show is a fine example. Pigpen and Garcia just own the song.

Hot damn, you're right. This is by far the best I've heard. Usually I find Pig's voice and style extremely forced, to the point of being unlistenable, as it's such a delicate song.

I'm A Hog for You Baby
The Coasters
Jerry Leiber / Mike Stoller

I'm a hog for you baby, can't get enough of your love
When I go to sleep at night that's what I'm dreaming of

One little piggie went to London
One little piggie went to Hong Kong
This little piggie's comin' over your house
'Cause it'll love you all night long

One little piggie ate pizza
One little piggie ate potato chips
This little piggie's comin' over your house
Gonna level with your sweet lips
